The Girls Book

The books climb Maslow's hierarchy of needs, from basic needs at the bottom to becoming your own best friend at the top. Ten workshops in each chapter, one a week, in any order you like.

Chapter 1

Our basic needs

Sleep, food, periods and bodies: the things every girl deserves to understand.

  • 1My Sleep
  • 2My Fuel
  • 3My Sanitation
  • 4My Period
  • 5My Sexual Health
  • 6My Fertility
  • 7My Boobs
  • 8My Mind Hunt
  • 9My Heart
  • 10My Well-being

Ten workshops of about an hour each, in the order of the book.

It always starts with a safe space

Every workshop opens with exercises that build trust and belonging before the topic begins, because girls arrive carrying their whole day with them. The idea is “kind interpretation”: choosing to believe everyone in the room means well.

No right or wrong way to use them

Some groups go from workshop 1 to 50. Others pick the topics their girls need most, or weave them into an existing curriculum on health, rights or leadership. The books work in schools, sports clubs, children's homes and NGOs, and with girls aged 8 to 27.

Next: the books in more languages

Right now the books exist only in English. Partners in Argentina and India told us that is the biggest barrier: the girls can't read them. Translating the books into Spanish, Hindi, Swahili and more is our next big goal.

Want the books for your group?

Organisations that can pay buy the books, and that helps fund books for those who can't. If your group has no budget, apply anyway: most of our books are donated.
